![]() Both statements are true, but it ducks the more difficult question of whether violence is a necessary catalyst that cannot be done without. It could be said the American colonists were being irrationally violent by refusing to pay taxes to the British and violently destroying property in protest, or that John Brown’s violent slave rebellions crossed a moral line. Yet these instances also show the disproportionate pressure placed on the revolutionary cause that makes an individual moment of violent resistance a sin, while systemic violence of a ruling power is tolerable. There is an overabundance of revolutions where the struggle produces horrific acts of violence, from the Maoist attempts to overthrow the Nepalese monarchy to the ongoing civil war in Syria. And then part of it just comes from the artistry and skill at play, where it's a lot more enjoyable to play Sir Brante, with it's clear and simple design goals of roleplaying, choosing-your-own-adventure, and resource management, than it is to engage with all the mess of half-baked mechanics of WTR, all for it's pursuit of a bloated and heavy-handed morality tale. It’s hard to think of another example where the ruling power and revolutionaries are as interchangeably evil as they are in Levine’s work. Part of that comes from how the political themes to me seem more considered, less intended to make a message, more to suit the world of the story and make it interesting. That said, I still find Sir Brante to be a far better game than We, The Revolution, and would still encourage people to try it. ![]() The idea of corrupt revolutionaries and societal conflict it deals with is more about using story tropes, I feel, than about explaining history by way of allegory. It doesn't start from a high-minded, ideological convinced position of holding the truth about a historical event like the French Revolution. The story and possibilities is all set, the struggles of the protagonist and the lesson he learns non-variable, whereas Sir Brante in it's fictional world strives to have the player see the different possibilities. Probably has some connection to how choice & consequence isn't something WTR really attempts, outside of individual encounters. It's kinda similar to the conflict on Monarch in The Outer Worlds, in how the moderate revolution is painted as the best choice. The virtuous side of the revolt is kinda found in the more bourgeois revolutionaries, coming from merchant classes who seek to strike a deal with the monarchy, to make the Anizotte a free city, where it can fit in within the state, while inspiring reform. Sir Brante makes choices that make the leading figure of the radical revolution be a villain who you either have to redeem by making her accept compromise, or you either accept as she is, leading to the near complete collapse of civilization and rapacious mob rule. There's plenty of truth in this, I think. If you see a post or comment that is breaking the rules, please report it!
